It doesn't validate, either. I'm just going to take some of the fonts and colors and make my own layout eventually. I've already changed the colors a little.

Sorry about the requirement for leaving the footer intact. I'm sure we aren't the only ones who insist on it. :) And I'll work on the annoying fixed font sizes. :P

You can achieve the effect of a collection of articles in several ways using WP plugins. We did the same thing on our web design site (http://www.pixelita.com) by using these plugins, for the exact same reason: we didn't want it to look like a blog.

There's a great plugin by Alex King called Articles, which you can find here:
http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress

After activating it, you'll need to go back to all your posts (or the posts you want to "feature") and tag them with a keyword (instructions ship with the plugin). You can put this on the front page by modifying your index.php file OR you can make it a page of its own, and you get the effect found here:
http://joniverse.com/best/

and here:
http://pixelita.com/showcase/

The only "gotcha" I can see is that if a "favored" post appears in more than one category, you'll see duplicate entries, as you do on each example link I've show above, but I can live with that. :)

Another way to control the exact order of posts on your front page is through Chaitgear's Post Order plugin, which is part of the Chaitgear Power Pack. (It also includes some other powerful, shouldn't be without, plugins such as CG Referer and CG AntiSpam; and its developer, David Chait, is as nice a guy as you'd ever want to know and always tries to answer any questions or troubleshoot things for you pretty quickly.)
